A dad who’s always found spelling a bit of a nightmare, and his mate from uni who now teaches it. WordGoal is what happened when we put our heads together.
Dave – the dad
I’ll be honest: I’ve never been great at spelling. Friday tests were the worst bit of my week at school, and I still double-check words now.
My daughter is football mad. So when the weekly spelling list came home, I didn’t fancy watching her sit through the same slog I did. I wanted something that felt more like the game she loves and less like homework.
Rob – the teacher
Rob and I met at university. He went on to become a primary school teacher, and he’s spent his career helping children across the county get on at school.
When I told him the idea, he made sure we did it properly – proper curriculum words, word families, prefixes and suffixes, and homophones explained in context, so it actually helps in class and not just on the screen.
What we care about
- Less stress. Get a word wrong and you get a clue and another go – no red pen.
- The real list. Parents can pop in the spellings from the school bag; teachers can set words for the whole class.
- Kids kept safe. Children sign in with a Player Name and PIN. No adverts, no chat.
