Choosing a spelling app for KS2

Ten out of ten on Friday is encouraging. Remembering those spellings in Monday’s writing is the bigger goal. Look for practice that helps children understand words, not just pass another test.

Does the school list fit?

Check the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 statutory lists, plus earlier words for children with gaps. If a paper list comes home, check how you select those words and whether you can schedule practice ahead.

Is there more than listen and spell?

Look for meanings, homophones in clear sentences, prefixes, suffixes and word families. Children still need opportunities to spell independently, without copying.

Can your child practise calmly?

Look for optional support, audio replay and a timer that can be hidden. A game setting can encourage practice, but it should not make a child afraid to make a mistake.

Can you see what needs teaching next?

A useful report identifies words that are secure, words not yet practised and words needing help. Teachers also need class views they can use in progress conversations.

What are you paying for?

Compare the annual cost for your whole family or school, not just a headline per-child price. Check whether spelling is a standalone product or part of a wider English bundle.

Who can see pupil information?

Read the privacy policy. Check child sign-in, advertising, chat and whether rewards involve real money. An attractive game is not a substitute for clear data handling.

Where WordGoal fits

WordGoal combines four spelling games with Word DNA, named adult-selected practice and printable progress reports. It is designed around English primary spelling, not secondary-school vocabulary or a full English course. The football setting lets children earn and personalise a player without buying rewards with real money.
